Foggy But Fabulous: Our Very Short Krems Detour

When our Viking river cruise itinerary said “Krems,” I pictured medieval charm, cobblestone streets, and maybe a pastry or two in a tucked-away café. What we actually got? A mountaintop monastery completely swallowed by fog — and honestly, it was kind of magical.

Instead of exploring Krems Old Town, we were off to Göttweig Abbey, a baroque Benedictine monastery perched high above the Wachau Valley. The fog was so thick we couldn’t see more than five feet ahead, but that only added to the ancient-and-mysterious vibes. Think Hogwarts, but with monks and Grüner Veltliner.

Getting to the Abbey (and Hoping for a View)

Gottweig Abbey in the fog

We docked in Krems early and boarded a Viking tour bus straight up the winding hillside to Göttweig. Our guide was cheerful and full of interesting trivia, undeterred by the blanket of fog rolling over the valley. “On a clear day, you can see forever!” she said. Cue polite laughter and existential sighs.

Touring the Abbey: Baroque Beauty in the Clouds

Göttweig Abbey is stunning. Even if you can’t see the valley beneath, the building itself is impressive — vast halls, intricate ceilings, and one of the grandest staircases in Europe (no exaggeration). Our tour walked us through the museum, the church, and even parts of the monks’ quarters-turned-exhibit spaces.

The fog turned the experience into a Gothic dream. I mean, who needs views when you’re wandering through 1,000 years of monastic history in eerie silence?

Wine Tasting in a Monastery? Yes, Please

Post-tour, we were treated to a wine tasting hosted by the abbey’s own vineyard. Yes, the monks make wine, and yes, it’s very good.

We sampled a crisp Grüner Veltliner and a floral Riesling while wrapped in fog and the faint scent of damp limestone. It was oddly romantic — even without the valley views.

My favorite Coat

This is one of those stops where you’ll be glad to have a cozy cardigan hand. Between the chilly stone walls and the crisp Austrian wine, layering up is essential.

Krems… Not Really Explored

Because the stop was focused on the abbey, we didn’t get to visit Krems Old Town. So, no Steiner Tor, no cobbled café wandering — but honestly, it was a nice change of pace. After busier days in Passau and Vienna, this slow, foggy morning was unexpectedly peaceful.

Would I have liked to wander Krems? Yes. Would I trade our cloudy wine-and-monk-mashup for that? Honestly… probably not.

Final Thoughts: A Misty Morning Well Spent

Göttweig Abbey wasn’t the sun-soaked valley experience I imagined, but it was one of the most atmospheric stops on our Danube cruise. It felt special. Sacred, even. And sipping wine in a centuries-old monastery while wrapped in fog? That’s a story I’ll tell forever.

If your Viking itinerary includes Krems/Göttweig, go with open expectations. And maybe bring a wine-safe backpack. Just in case.
