Beauty & Toiletries Essentials
When it comes to beauty and toiletries, less is more—especially because you’re working with a carry-on! The key is packing smart with travel-size versions of your everyday favorites and adding a few game-changing extras. Let’s dive into the must-haves that will keep you looking (and feeling) fresh on the go, without sacrificing valuable luggage space.
Skincare & Beauty Must-Haves
- Travel-Size Sunscreen: Yes, you do need sunscreen even on cloudy days—those UV rays are sneaky! Protect your skin with a compact bottle that fits easily into your day bag.
- Neutrogena Makeup Remover Wipes: My personal favorite and these travel sizes are a major space saver. Perfect for a quick refresh mid-flight or after a long day of sightseeing. They’re TSA-friendly, too!
- Mini Hair Brush: No more wild hair moments—this little brush will be your best friend.
- Mini Travel Essential Kit: Look for kits that include shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and lotion all in one set.
- Dry Shampoo: A lifesaver when there’s no time to wash your hair but you need to look good ASAP.
- Mini Loofah Sponge: Because your skincare deserves more than a hotel washcloth. These are the perfect size. I put them in a ziplock bag and squeeze them down to a super small size and shove them into my shoes or boots.
Toiletry Tips for Carry-Ons
- Reusable Silicone Bottles: Fill them with your go-to shampoo, conditioner, or lotion—eco-friendly and TSA-approved. Important tip: make sure to label your bottles! There is nothing like trying to figure out which one is hand lotion and which one is conditioner when you are jet lagged…. So I have heard.
- Travel Cream Jars: Perfect for moisturizers and serums without lugging the full-size versions. You can bring your essential creams only. Remember, vacation is not when you do your 15-step facial cleanse! You will do that when you get home.
- 16-Pack Travel Size Toiletries Kit: This kit is a great option for several different size bottles and cream jars. You can use it with or without the bag. They work great!
- Electric Toothbrush Covers: Protect your toothbrush head and keep it hygienic during transit. I have never been able to use the travel toothbrushes. This is the best option to keep it clean. Tip: leave the charger at home! Most electric toothbrushes will hold their charge for a long time. Even if it slows down it will still be a better option then an old plastic toothbrush!
- Cosmetic Bag: I have gone through so many bags over the years. I have finally found one that works great for me. The travel sized bottles can stand up in this bag and it allows for more tightly organized items. The bottom section for brushes is great to keep the more bulky items away from the bottled items. Also if there happens to be a leak you won’t be digging out face moisturizer out of your bronzer brush! (ask me how I know!)
- Travel Pill Organizer: Leave your bottles at home! Keep vitamins and meds neatly packed, and avoid those bulky bottles. Of course if you need your med bottles for directions that is an exception I would make. However, many of us have our routines down. This is a great way to bring what you need without bringing a giant bottle!
- Makeup Brush Holder: For small quick trips where I don’t need to bring a full cosmetic bag I love this brush holder. It has openings to vent the brushes so they don’t get musty or squished and gross. It holds all of my brushes and I can gram this guy almost anywhere in a backpack or suitcase without damaging my brushes.
Pro Tip
When deciding between mini versions and reusable containers, think about how long you’ll be traveling. For short trips, mini versions make sense, but for longer journeys (or if you’re picky about your products), reusable containers save money and waste. Plus, with a few refills, you’ll get way more bang for your buck.
Clothing & Outfit Planning
Creating 7 stylish, mix-and-match outfits using only a carry-on may sound like a puzzle—but it’s totally doable! The goal is to pack versatile pieces that work across multiple occasions and climates. You’ll stay comfy, chic, and ready for anything without feeling like you’re living out of a suitcase. Here’s your packing guide to a well-rounded capsule wardrobe.
This wardrobe isn’t just compact—it’s flexible. You’ll be able to create 7 (or more!) outfits with different combinations, and you’ll be ready for just about any situation without lugging around a giant suitcase. Now you can enjoy your trip and look amazing while doing it!
Clothing (7 Outfits, Mix & Match)
- 6 Tops:
- 2 casual T-shirts or tanks (for layering).
- 2 long-sleeve shirts (a knit or button-up).
- 1 lightweight sweater for evenings out.
- 1 cozy sweater (perfect for flights or chilly nights).
- 3 Bottoms:
- 1 Pair of Jeans: Classic and versatile—wear on repeat without guilt.
- 1-Liverpool wide leg trouser or Lightweight trousers Either of these options are perfect for packing, lightweight and can be dressed up or down for any occasion
- 1 Pair of Fleece-Lined Leggings: Perfect for planes, lounging, or chilly destinations.
- 1-Pair of leggings– for warmer destinations these are great for the plane ride or exploring or realizing on a deck.
- 1 Dress: A simple dress can easily be a staple on your trip. Wear with a sweater over to create a skirt/top look. Dress up for dinner or with tennis shoes for exploring!
- Airplane Travel outfits
- PrettyGarden 2 Piece TrackSuit– comfortable enough to sleep in but cute enough for the trip.
- Compression socks– perfect if your feet swell. These are game changers!
Outerwear & Layers
- Rain Jacket: Only pack if you’re headed somewhere rainy—it’s lightweight and easy to fold. These go at the bottom of the backpack and easy to bring just in case.
- 1 Lightweight Sweater: Great for layering under the rain jacket or wearing solo on cooler mornings.
- 1 Thermal Top & Bottom Set: If your trip involves cold weather, these are your secret weapon for staying warm.
- Heavy Sweater: One chunky sweater—your hero piece for extra warmth or cozy airport style. This girl is pretty bulky so I recommend that she goes with you on the plane to save space in your luggage. Planes are normally pretty chilly so you will be glad for the warmth!
Undergarments & Extras
- 12 Pairs of Underwear: Because laundry isn’t guaranteed—and it’s always better to have too many than too few.
- 2 Tank Tops: Great for layering or wearing solo on warmer days.
- Travel Pillowcase: Optional, but if you’re a picky sleeper, it can make any bed feel like home.
Winter Items for Colder Destinations
- Long Coat: This is a great option for the days that might be cold in the morning and evening but warmer in the afternoon. It is a great layering piece but not too heavy.
- 1-hoodie When I am traveling in a more colder destination I will bring an extra sweatshirt. This helps with not being bored with my outfits looking the same every day.
- Lightweight puffer jacket– This coat has seen some miles for sure! It has held up great for me. When I use this jacket I will forgo the long coat. Its one or the other depending on my destination.
- Gloves with touch screen– These are good for when you know you will be wearing gloves most of the day and you need to access your phone. I mean, we have to take pictures right?
- Fleece lined beanie – she is cute and fun! You can throw this on when your ears are frozen and it’s great for keeping your head warm. This really helps if you are in a colder climate and anticipate being outside often.
- Heated vest– this was a splurge when we went to Iceland. You will need a portable battery pack to go with it. But you were this under your heavy coat and over a shirt. It was amazingly warm. My husband gets cold very easily. He loved his so that we could be outdoors for long periods of time without being frozen when we got back to our room!
Pro Packing Tips
Color Palette Matters
Stick to a few neutral or complementary colors so everything works together
Think black, white, beige, or navy with a pop of color.
Wear the Bulkiest Items
If you’re bringing boots or a heavy sweater, wear them on the plane to free up space.
Packing Cubes
Separate your tops, bottoms, and accessories for easy access during your trip.
Footwear That Won’t Let You Down –Shoes & Accessories
- 1 Pair of Chelsea Boots: These are comfy enough for sightseeing and look great with everything from jeans to dresses.
- 1 Pair of Dress Shoes: Flats or loafers—something stylish and compact for nights out.
- 6 Pairs of Socks: Pack a mix of ankle socks and cozy ones if you’ll be walking a lot.
- 3 Bras: A comfortable everyday bra and one with a little extra support for busier days.
Tips for Packing Shoes: Stuff them with socks or small items to save space.
Backpacks & Luggage: The Perfect Carry-On
- Choosing the Right Carry-On Suitcase:
- Hard-shell vs. soft-shell carry-ons. This is a personal preference really. I have both and they are about the same for space. The main thing to remember here is to not skimp. The better quality you have the longer they will last!
- Expandable carry-ons for those inevitable souvenirs.
- Best Travel Backpacks:
- Lightweight backpacks with laptop compartments for work-and-play trips.
- Anti-theft backpacks for peace of mind in busy cities.
- Convertible backpacks that double as daypacks.
- Long haul flight backpacks
- Belt bag
- Smart Packing for Bags:
- Use packing cubes inside backpacks for organization.
- Keep your personal items (passport, charger) easily accessible in an outer compartment.
Pro Tip: Check your airline’s carry-on size restrictions—they vary more than you think!
Travel Tech & Miscellaneous Must-Haves
Small Gadgets to Pack:
- Portable chargers and charging cables.
- Book light
- Privacy screen for laptop
- Keyboard case for ipad
- Apple airpods
- Carry charger case
- Leather travel jewelry box
- Foldable travel makeup mirror
- Airpod case with keychain
Gear for the Plane
- Travel blanket + pillow– Now this is debatable. If you are a person that can sleep anywhere and you have a coat with you, you can skip this. Your coat = your blanket. However, if you are someone who runs cold and wants to be sure you will be comfortable and like me, doesn’t trust the little blanket in bag that is at your seat, then this is a good option. It folds flat really well to slide into the back of a bag.
- Sleep mask– These are amazing for long flights. Put this on and lights out!
When to Shop for These Essentials
- Pre-Trip Shopping Tips:
- Plan ahead to avoid last-minute Amazon panic purchases. I normally start gathering my items for our longer trips around 1-2 months out. I will do a quick inventory of what I have left over and what is needed to refill. That way I am not running around and impulse buying out of panic the week of the trip.
- Check for seasonal sales or bundle deals. Very often Costco, Sams, Target or Amazon will have travel deals on their specific travel accessories. Keep an eye out for that year round as you can stock up long before you even have a flight booked.
- What’s Worth the Splurge vs. What’s Not:
- Spend on quality basics; save on single-use travel-sized products. Good solid packing cubes are a must for me. I also will splurge on a suitcase if it is of good quality. But I like to see and touch them in stores to be sure. I have been burned in the past with bad luggage that couldn’t really hold weight well and the wheels were poor quality. This makes for a very grumpy traveler!
Final Thoughts & Packing Checklist
- Checklist Recap:
- Remember your list can be adapted to your own needs. Take my list above and tweak and edit it so that it applies to you specifically. Remember the more you travel the better you will be at all of this. Don’t sweat it and just do your best. As a friend of mine often reminds me, “there will be stores where you are going, don’t panic” ! Good advice I often remind myself.
- It is also important to double check any rules from the airlines you will be flying on. When you book an international flight very often you will not be flying american airlines out of France. You will be on another carrier. Pay attention to those details in your airline reservation information. You can easily check the carry on restrictions and guidelines on any airline’s website. There are many airlines that have very different rules surrounding what can be carryon and what can not be. This is a lesson I have learned several times.
- Remember: Travel light, stress less, and enjoy the journey!
And there you have it—your ultimate carry-on capsule wardrobe and travel essentials! With smart packing, you’ll feel organized, stylish, and ready for anything your trip throws your way (without the stress of lugging extra bags). Remember, it’s all about versatility: pick items you love that can mix and match, and keep things light with smart toiletries and compact accessories. Now you can focus on what really matters—enjoying your adventure!
